What is a Lubricant?

During sexual arousal, a woman's vagina typically produces natural lubrication, which makes it wetter and ready for sex. Many women believe that lubricants make sex more comfortable and pleasurable by reducing friction and irritation. A lubricant (from Latin *lubrico* - to make smooth, slippery) is a material that reduces friction and facilitates better sliding. The word "lubricant" has a broader meaning, but the essence is the same.

Occasionally, every woman experiences vaginal dryness. When there is insufficient lubrication, dryness leads to pain and discomfort. This can occur when estrogen levels drop during menopause. Vaginal dryness can also happen during stress, pregnancy, breastfeeding, chemotherapy, and other conditions. In such cases, a lubricant can help replace the missing lubrication, act as a moisturizing agent, and alleviate dryness symptoms.

Sometimes women simply prefer more lubrication than their body naturally provides. In these circumstances, a lubricant can help. A lubricant is a liquid or gel that can be used by women and their partners during sex to make the vagina or anus more moist. Lubricant is essential when a couple is using condoms or sex toys to reduce friction.

Lubricants protect the mucous membranes from microtears and irritation, through which infections can penetrate, relieve pain, and increase comfort.

There are 3 types of lubricants, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

A water-based lubricant is usually inexpensive. Due to its light water base, it most closely mimics natural vaginal lubrication. It is perfect for use with condoms and sex toys. The lubricant is suitable for vaginal and anal sex and is ideal as a moisturizing agent. It can dry out during sexual intercourse, so it typically needs to be reapplied. Unscrupulous manufacturers often include glycerin in lubricants, which can cause yeast infections. To avoid such risks, it’s best to avoid lubricants that contain glycerin.

A silicone-based lubricant is more expensive than a water-based lubricant. It has a longer-lasting sliding effect. However, such a lubricant requires thorough washing immediately after sex; otherwise, it may irritate the mucosa. It should not be used with silicone toys. Silicone-based lubricants may also contain glycerin. Look for glycerin-free lubricants.

An oil-based lubricant provides a long-lasting sliding effect. It is ideal for clitoral stimulation, erotic massage, and does not require washing. It is a great natural plant-based alternative to silicone lubricants for anal sex. This lubricant should not be used with condoms (oil can destroy latex). Do not confuse oil-based lubricants with those made from petroleum products (mineral oil, petroleum jelly, etc.). The latter can cause irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes.

The choice of lubricant is, of course, a personal decision, and couples can try different types of lubricants to see which one works best for them.
