How Long Should Sex Last?

There is no strict rule for how long sex should last. The duration of intercourse depends on the couple and many other factors. For example:

• Circumstances. Young parents may not always have time for long sexual encounters. Couples on vacation alone may be able to spend the whole day in bed.

• Preferences. Some couples prefer quick sex, while others enjoy a slower pace.

• Age and health. As people get older, they may need more time to become aroused and reach orgasm.

• Definition of "sex". Couples define sex differently. Some consider it only vaginal intercourse, while others include all sexual activities such as massage, foreplay, oral sex, and more.

From a scientific perspective, the duration of sex is associated with the intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT). This measurement starts when the penis first enters the vagina and ends when the man ejaculates.

A 2005 study of 500 heterosexual couples across five different countries found that the average IELT was 5.4 minutes.

Interestingly, the use of condoms and circumcision do not affect the duration of sex. Some men believe that condoms reduce sensitivity and may affect erection strength. However, a 2015 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that condom use had no impact on the duration of intercourse.

Pop culture has created the image of a "real man" who can maintain an erection all night. This stereotype has deeply influenced our perception of sex. As a result, many couples believe their sex sessions are too short. Men, in particular, tend to feel insecure about this. However, even if a man does not satisfy his partner during intercourse, there are other ways to do so.

The duration of sex is a unique experience for every couple. For some, one minute is enough. Of course, a "one-minute lover" might disappoint some women, but not every woman reaches orgasm through penetration alone.
